Can Psoriasis Affect More Than Your Skin?

Studies show that psoriasis, a skin disease with red, scaly and itchy patches, increases the risk of developing other medical conditions. Be sure to tell your dermatologist if you have any of the signs or symptoms.

According to a news release from the American Academy of Dermatology (www.aad.org), here are some signs that may indicate an issue.

EYE PROBLEMS

Eyelids that stick together and are difficult to open, especially when you wake up, or are swollen, itchy or sore.

Eyelids that are crusty or greasy.

Redness, tearing or a sticky yellow discharge from your eyes.

Dry eyes or eyes that are red, painful or light sensitive.

Blurry vision or seeing dark, floating spots.

DIARRHEA, PAIN IN ABDOMEN, OR FEVER

Psoriasis may increase the risk of developing Crohn’s Disease.

 

WEIGHT GAIN

Many people who have psoriasis gain a substantial amount of weight.

Also, overweight patients are more likely to get psoriasis.

The extra weight and psoriasis put you at increased risk of developing other conditions like high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, heart and blood vessel disease and diabetes.

 

MOOD CHANGES

Feeling anxious, sad or having thoughts of suicide.

 

DENTAL

Swollen, bleeding gums, gums pulling away from your teeth. These are signs of periodontal disease, which has been found to occur more often in people who have psoriasis.

 

FATIGUE, PAIN IN THE UPPER RIGHT ABDOMEN, UNEXPECTED WEIGHT LOSS

Psoriasis increases the risk of developing into liver disease.

 

PAIN, STIFF JOINTS

One or more of swollen or stiff joints, especially when you wake up, could be a sign of psoriatic arthritis. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent severe arthritis.

 

URINATING LESS, RETAINING FLUID (SWOLLEN LEGS, ANKLES OR FEET, FEELING DROWSY OR FATIGUED

Severe psoriasis may increase the risk of developing kidney disease.
