Mexico's Day of the Dead Celebration
Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday that honors the deceased and helps them on their spiritual journey. The occasion, a joyous one in spite of the macabre name, originally took place in the summer but now coincides with Halloween. Celebrants believe that at midnight on October 31st, the spirits of children who have died (angelitos or little angels) come back to be with their loved ones for 24 hours. Then on November 2nd, the spirits of deceased adults return to enjoy the festivities.
